In response to Shawn's comments about my post from yesterday, he's quite right noting that the Negro Leagues had no reliable stats. But the fact is that modern journalists and fans hold that AGAINST Negro Leaguers, like it was their fault no stats were kept. It's also true that many Negro Leaguers never played against white players, but too many people also hold THAT against Negro Leaguers as well. And guys like Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx and Cobb (who was evil personified) never played against black players. So using the prevailing logic that condemns Negro Leaguers, we can't say for certain how good those white guys were, either. If we want to be totally fair, we shouldn't put any player, black or white, who played before 1947 on any type of all-time list. Failing that, all I'm asking for is a little consideration and fairness. You don't have to fill all-time teams with Negro Leaguers, but it's likewise wrong to shut them out completely.
