I recently participated in a Scavenger Hunt (I finished second, and it's still a sore subject).  One of the items was an old issue of Sports Illustrated, which sent me hunting through boxes of old magazines that I left at my parents house when I moved out.

In addition to finding the S.I. that was on the Hunt list, I also came across a stack of old Sport Magazines.  For those of you that don't remember, Sport was a competitor of S.I. and The Sporting News.  It prided itself on being trendier and more cutting edge.  Kind of like today's ESPN the Magazine.  Of course, without the backing of a major sports network, Sport folded some time between the mid-1980s and today.

I was always a big fan of Sport, however, and I flipped through a couple issues.  One of them was from the summer of 1985.  A pre-pine tar George Brett was on the cover, and I decided to flip through.

I'm not sure if it was guest-edited by Nostradamus, but among the articles in this particular issue were an NBA draft preview.  The article focused on Georgetown center Patrick Ewing, but also discussed a few small school sleepers at power forward:  Karl Malone and Charles Oakley.

There was also an article about a recent call-up in Boston.  The hard-throwing 22 year old just might be what Series starved Fenway fans have been waiting for, claimed Sport.  His name?  Roger Clemens.

Finally, there was an article about a National League manager's first full season at the helm of his team.  The interview asked him his style, and included this quote from the skipper.
"I'd consider myself an aggressive manager.  I'm a gambling manager, because that's how I played."
The name of this gambling manager?  Pete Rose
