Don’t get me wrong, I respect a guy like Phil Simms. He’s a classy guy and a proven winner, but what is CBS thinking making him a featured color-guy for marquee NFL games?

Sure, Simms obviously has the NFL resume and football knowledge, but plain and simple, cut and dry, he’s a bore. His voice is monotone, while is insight is not nearly the output being delivered by the competitor networks. FOX’s “big-game” announcing team also features a former NFL quarterback in Troy Aikman, who’s paired with Joe Buck, but the main difference is Aikman and Buck don’t put the viewers to sleep, while providing a steady stream of colorful, intelligent commentary.

“It’s tough to get out there and make any yards,” Simms said this afternoon commenting on the Jets’ defensive unit. Make any yards? Profound. If I didn’t have a triple-shot latte about an hour ago, I might be asleep, missing a grudge-match between two AFC East rivals, in game that features the protégé- Jets head coach Eric Mangini attempting to unseat his mentor, Patriots head coach Bill Belechick.

I’ve tried to give Simms the benefit of the doubt year after year now, but I’m simply fed-up. It’s a shame that guys like Dick Enberg have been relegated to college and radio duties, leaving us no better option during a playoff game than a guy whose voice and insight are comparative to the character Dauber from the old football show Coach.

Simms comments are dull and witless and it simply amazes me that CBS hasn’t found a better option, at least for a playoff game!
