RAY LUCAS – PUBLIC ENEMY # 1 FOR BILLS FANS

It’s not too surprising that Ray Lucas would present an absolute bias when giving his analysis on the Buffalo Bills in a recent telecast of his “Jets Nation” show which airs on the SNY channel. After all, the guy spent seven of his lowly eight years in the NFL on rival AFC East teams. He spent one season watching Drew Bledsoe in New England, four years soaking up bench time in New York with the Jets and two years lobbing interceptions as a Miami Dolphin.
On a April 14 airing of “Jets Nation,” Lucas gave an outlook on the Buffalo Bills chances for the 2007 season that was far more gloomy than the grayest of Buffalo days in November, worse than the winds that swoop in off Lake Erie and finally, worse than Lucas’s poor excuse for a career. When asked whether or not he thought the Bills have a chance to improve on last season’s 7-9 record, Lucas proclaimed “ABSOLUTELY NOT,” which was followed by a head-back cackling session.
Lucas and his co-hosts assaulted the Bills off-season efforts, stating they “traded the whole team away,” and that they will “be lucky to finish the first eight games 0-10.” The Lucas-led battering went on to say “Bills fans should just black out every game this year.”
It makes sense that a New York Jets show might be critical of a divisional rival, but is it any coincidence that these types of comments were led by Lucas? Sure- Lucas’s astute observation that the Bills traded McGahee and linebacker Takeo Spikes is accurate. He again hit the nail on the head when he noted that linebacker London Fletcher-Baker and cornerback Nate Clements landed big contracts elsewhere. No mention was made of the fact that McGahee ran for a mere 990 yards and six touchdowns. He seemed to have forgotten that Spikes’ only play of significance occurred on the first play of the first game in New England. No mention of either McGahee or Spikes’ inability to ever truly recover from their debilitating injuries. Certainly no disservice was directed toward the San Francisco 49ers for handing Clements the pot of gold he was mining for. Any mention of the fact that the Bills have their sights on the 2007 NFL Draft’s most notable linebacker in Patrick Willis? Of course not. It’s Ray Lucas- he’s a backup, you can’t expect starter’s productivity out of a guy who has made a living riding the pine.
After leading the Dolphins to a 5-1 start with a two game lead on the AFC East, then starting quarterback Jay Fiedler was stung by the injury bug. No biggy most figured, Lucas would be able to ease his way into the lineup by opening up with the struggling Buffalo Bills. Or would he? As it turns out, Lucas’s debut as a Dolphin in Buffalo went down as one of the single worst performances in the history of the organization. Lucas threw four wretched interceptions, including three to Nate Clements and fumbled the ball twice- both of which were recovered by the Bills.
Dolphins fans took notice.

Many folks around the football world have identified that the Bills have a difficult schedule next season and it’s certainly understood that the team needs to shore-up the running back and linebacker positions. However, for Lucas and his group of cronies to state that the Bills would be lucky to go 0-10 in the first eight games is absolutely ridiculous. Looks like the journeyman mop-up quarterback is aspiring to flush his second career down the tubes as well.
