I know you're waiting breathlessly for an update on the Batavia Muckdogs. I know I'm waiting breathlessly, which is probably why I'm light-headed right now.

The Muckdogs — the Single-A, short-season affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals — have struggled so far this year. They're 4-7 and tied for last place in the NY-Penn League's Pinckney Division with Jamestown. The 'Dogs are three games behind division-leading Williamsport. Lousy Williamsport.

However, Batavia snapped a three-game losing streak last night with a win over Mahoning Valley. (And no, I have no idea where Mahoning Valley is. But does that really matter? Does anything really matter? Of course it does. What matters is the space between you and me, man.) Batavia takes on the Scrappers again tonight in about nine minutes.

The Muckdogs appear to be very strong at the plate — their team batting average is fifth out of 14 teams in the league at .261, and Steve Hill is batting .436, third in the league. Hill's five doubles are tied for second in that category.

Pitching, however, seems to be a different story — the Muckdogs are dead last in team ERA at 5.38. They've also allowed the most earned runs and the most hits. Jonathan Stambaugh has a 1.54, but the next lowest ERA on the team is Jesse Todd's 5.25. Ouch.

And the fans aren't showing up to watch the 'Dogs — average attendance is 1,486, second-to-last in the league. Brooklyn, by the way, is leading the league with an average crowd of a whopping 8,082. Many Triple-A teams would kill for that.
